Most weeks, Brad and Lara have played it safe, sticking to a basic white colour scheme and keeping their furniture nice and neutral. But this week, the couple decided it was time to branch out and take a risk, presenting a kitchen that had, as its feature, a giant blown-up map of Melbourne.
It paid off — the judges absolutely loved it!
"Look at this, isn't that clever," John McGath said upon seeing their Melways street map bench feature.
"That is seriously cool — I have never seen it done before," Neale added, also clearly impressed with their clever little idea.
For Brad and Lara, who so often get it wrong with their styling, the judges' comments were a great validation of how far they have come during the competition. They've started to think outside the box — and it's clearly starting to pay dividends. Although Lara was initially undecided about Brad's decision to spray-paint their vintage lights a glossy black, wanting to play it safe by keeping them green, she soon came around to his thinking after seeing what a great job the guys at the auto shop had done.
The judges loved them too.
"I love those pendants — they are fantastic," John remarked, upon looking up.
This week, they also had the added advantage of being able to go back and fix one of their early rooms — and they're much happier with what they've now done with their lounge room.
Although they didn't secure a win, Brad admits they are still thrilled with their new-look house... and score.
"Any other week, you'd be wrapped to get a score of 8.5," he points out.
