How to: care for indoor plants
Photography: Getty Images.
Here are 10 top tips to keep your plants healthy and happy:
1. If you have a pot plant growing on a windowsill, rotate the pot every couple of days to prevent it from bending toward the direction of the light.
2. Overwatering can kill your plant. Before watering, insert the top of your finger into the soil. If the soil is damp the plant does not need any more water.
3. Drastic changes in temperature are not ideal for many plants, and most will not survive gas heating. If your plant likes cooler conditions, don't put it close to your heater this winter.
4. Avoid placing your plant in a draughty area, such as a hallway or near an air-conditioning vent.
5. Some indoor plants will thrive in a humid environment. To create humidity, place the pot inside a larger pot, filling the space in between with stones or compost so the plant will retain moisture.
6. Different indoor plants require different light exposure so check when buying what environment your variety requires. About 8 to 16 hours a day in a sunny spot will promote growth.
7. Indoor plants need a trim to look their best! This will help the plant keep its shape. It's best to prune in the warmer months, but you can trim your plant all year round.
8. It is important to keep your plant pest free. Inspect the leaves regularly, and wipe them clean with a damp sponge, or spray with water.
9. Pot plants require a container with good drainage. Place a saucer underneath the pot to catch excess water.
10. The most important thing to remember when looking for the right pot plant is its compatibility with your home. Happy planting!
