Great living rooms and why they work
A great living room is all about a great sofa. Choose wisely and it'll be with you for years. Here's how to pick the perfect piece to suit your style and arrange it to fit your floorplan.
What's my sofa style?
Face to face sofa
This is the classic arrangement of two sofas facing each other - it could be a same size combo or a two- and three-seater. It's a great layout for creating a conversation zone and it's a slightly more formal look, more grown up, in design terms.
Feature sofa
The feature sofa becomes the focal point, often with an artwork above. The room is built around this sofa. In larger rooms, it may be paired with a couple of chairs.
Fashion sofa
The "It girl" of sofas - bang on the latest trend and totally fabulous.
Family sofa
This is the much-loved and highly flexible modular sofa. The ultimate pile on piece where families come together for movie nights and mayhem. Often, it's the heart of the open plan living space.
Fall asleep sofa
The sofa bed offers flexibility for the kids to have sleepovers. It's a great option if you don't have a separate guest room, too.
Jacinta's tricks for living room bliss
1. Paint the walls
2. Sort the sofa
3. Sort the furniture arrangement
4. Add some colour with rugs and chairs
5. Add a feature light and some good side lamps
6. Add cushions
7. Add flowers, frames and fairy lights
8. Remember to add one completely overscale, unexpected item
9. Try and keep the TV smaller than a car and, better still, hide it in a cabinet
10. Be brave
Comfort = joy
Now that we know what we like, and we know what we need, a first and last word - if it's not comfortable it can never be really great!
King Furniture's top tips for buying a sofa to suit your look and lifestyle.
1. What to look for in fabric?
Choose a fabric that suits your lifestyle, e.g. high abrasion resistance and fabric protection for a high-traffic or family environment.
2. What to look for in leather?
Choose quality cowhide that has been tanned or drum dyed with colour all the way through the hide - such as King Furniture's TrueTouch leather.
3. How important is warranty?
As long as it's backed up by the company giving the warranty. The King Furniture engineered-steel frame has a 15 year written warranty.
4. Lasting comfort
This is dependent on the frame, seating and back system, so look for high-quality steel or hardwood frames and a strong, supportive suspension system.
